Home Improvement

Throughout my years, I have always been creative.  I would draw, sing, make clothes, etc... Honestly, it was just the way I was raised.  Creativity was never lacking, even as an adult, except when it came to spontaneous home improvement type projects.

There were only two reasons that I would attempt those projects, at first.  It would either be out of financial need or as a direct response to some show on TLC.  I remember watching Ty Pennington create an independent stationary bed headboard or breathing new life into a sofa.  I would think that looks great, I can do that.

After completely revamping a love seat of mine, from really nice to an aesthetic work of art, with only some material and a staple gun, I started to think outside the box.  I would walk around my then six bedroom apartment thinking of ways to improve it.

One of my favorite small projects was in my youngest daughter’s room.  I altered an armoire.  It was beautiful, but I was never too thrilled that the doors located in the top section were glass.  We know how children can be sometime.  I decided to unscrew the glass doors and replaced them with small playful curtains.  She loved the change and so did I.  Not only did it supply easier access to her clothes, it also added to the decor in the room.

Previously, the room was good, but the many unique improvements made it wonderful.  Positive adjustments affect the psyche for the better.  When your space flourishes so do you.  Consider a change today.

Memorial Day

Alice Benton's Blog wishes everyone a wonderful Memorial Day. Many simply view this day, formerly known as Decoration Day, as the unofficial start of summer, but it's much more than that.  Memorial Day is a day observed to show love, and honor for our fallen soldiers. I respectfully salute all of those who have contributed to freedom by paying the ultimate price.

God bless you all and enjoy!

Barbeque's and parties are being planned with friends.  Events are coming fast and furious with the change in the weather.  Use this time to honor yourself and family.  This lifetime is to be shared with the ones you .

God bless you all.  Enjoy this weekend with your loved ones and have a ball.

Revelations

This weekend has been an emotional one. I have been about my business, as usual, but something has been different. I'm noticing things more and experiencing them in a more relevant way. I feel more alive. I know God is with me.

While I have not been looking for lessons, I am receiving them. They are life lessons that are also perfectly in tune with my work. Taking them in has been amazing to say the least. God is so good and His love is shining.

As you are going through your day, night, conversations, etc... Take note of as much as you can because it's all important. Love every moment and know that you are forever learning a better way of being. Know exactly what you mean when you say something and stand firm in it. Remain inline with who you are and your true purpose always.

God is watching us. He has faith and will guide us, if we let Him.

Sometime You Cannot Go With The Flow

Have you ever had a front row seat to the many horrors of life?  Or experienced a day that in ways felt traumatizing?  Only to have these happenstances leave you feeling beat down.  Some situations never seem to go away.  The bad vibe that's flowing around may not be your fault, but be careful.  It's easy to spread pain.  Stay on your guard.  Don't let the days events trick you into spewing hate because you're better then that.

Often, when we are targeted by someones hurt and it is our natural inclination to carry and spread it.  Ask yourself, how am I contributing to this situation.  While you didn't start the negative behavior, you don't have to finish it.  Sadly, if you do, it is likely to be taken out on someone that doesn't deserve it.

Redirect your energy flow.  It isn't always a simple thing to do and it will take a little effort, but it is well worth it.  Use your chi to make yourself feel better.  Move forward knowing you did your best to encourage a better day, instead of ensuring one that sucks.  Do something that brings you joy!

Fashion Trend Dos & Don'ts

Fashion trends, the truth can be found in its title.  Trends are just that, nothing to live by, but it's a nice quick fresh jump added to your wardrobe.  Staples are classics and not to be confused with trendy pieces.

First trending rule is every style isn't for you.  As soon as you accept that life will go smoother.  It's smart to be aware of all the latest looks, but always keep in mind your body type, age and overall fashion sense.  Clothing is supposed to be comfortable, liberating and fun.  Ask yourself if you'll feel good wearing this new clothing.  Does it send the message you want?

Some trends to pay attention to are jean jackets, big and belly tops, printed leggings, feathers, big totes and big bows.

Dos - Jean Jackets are back and strong.  There are several designs out there so pick the one that works best for you.  Big Tops are also in...thank God!  This is great for those who have a little to hide, but don't over do it.  Pick the right size (not to big) so you are not swimming in it, which draws more attraction.  Printed Leggings, the new way, with words!  The Urban 1972 leggings found at urban1972.com are so cute! Feathers, a strategic feather never hurt anybody and I'm loving feather earrings.  It doesn't matter if it's one sided or both.  Totes, the bigger the better and spice it up!

Don'ts - Belly Tops, regardless of your size this has been done to death and often doesn't look like fashion.  It tends to be more like a quick unwanted flash.  Printed Leggings, animal printed leggings are happily over.  Last, Big Hair Bows, this is a never.  Unless you have one of those I can wear anything faces that most people don't have, don't do it.  They have a mysterious Betty Boop appeal that isn't pleasant.

In the end, the only thing that is important in fashion is you.  So, agree or disagree, be yourself and have a ball!

Oprah

This day finally came, the last Oprah Winfrey Show.  It had been a long time coming, but it still sort of took us by surprise.  It was an unbelievable ride.  It was filled with great shows and changing platforms...we loved it!

The final season was phenomenal. Oprah out did herself. These shows were befitting the ending season. Show-after-show the guest or giveaway was fabulous and they kept coming.  This was truly one of Oprah's best seasons.

Your satisfaction of the last show depends on why you watched. Some complained that there was no hoopla! No cars.  No houses.  I loved it...just Oprah.  I thought it was the perfect good-bye "until we meet again," as Ms. Winfrey said.

We could have easily enjoyed another season with Lady O, but I support her decision.  It's time for Oprah to spread her wings even further and deeper into the world.  What I know for sure is that this shift will equal blessings for many throughout the world and OWNniverse.

May God continue to bless Oprah Winfrey and all the lives she has touched, including mine.

Fleet Week New York 2011

Fleet Week is a big deal in New York City!  It officially begins tomorrow, Wednesday, May 25th - 30th, 2011. Festivities include everything from the Parade of Ships, and Broadway Performances to extended museum hours.  There will also be a ceremony held on Memorial Day at 11 A.M., as well as much more.

For more information on the activities for the week there are many sources.  The New York Daily News provided great information both online and by creating a Fleet Week pullout for this past Sundays paper.  About.com also supplied invaluable information.  The Intrepid Museum site is also fantastic.

Come out and celebrate our military as they visit the Harbor!  It will be a fantastic time with plenty to enjoy.

Faith

Faith means many things around the world.  It is always represented in various ways.  Definitions span from allegiance to strong beliefs. While the opinion sometime changes, for me, it always remains the same.

My faith is completely tied to God and it's strong.  For the record, when I speak of God, I am referring to the creator of all things; the Holy Trinity. Also, when I say I am a believer, I mean that I believe in God.  Faith is knowing that God exist and that all is in fact well because of Him.  This is how I survive the unbelievable happenings that occur.  God has my back and I am always on His side.  That knowledge strengthens me.  It affirms who I am, as well as negates who I am not.

Believe...faith can get you through things when nothing else can.

Slow Down

Today I set out to do many things and one-by-one my attempts fell apart.  I was unable to complete much of what I wanted to accomplish.  Time appeared to be moving faster than I could.  I had several personal deadlines to meet, but could not.  I found it impossible to will myself into action.  Typically, that isn't me.

Every time I couldn't make things happen I would pause.  I thought, what's going on?  I have always been a believer in signs.  I thought, what is the God trying to tell me?  The answer was obvious.  I needed to slow down.  Today, in particular, I had taken on too much. So, I sat with God in mind.  I was still and breathed for several minutes. Afterwards, I was able to focus better on what should be done.  I also realized that I could delegate if necessary.  I had plenty of help available.  Why not use it?

We as people often do not access our resources.  We were not meant to do it all or live this life alone.  It's vital to examine the multitude of opportunities that exists.  It is important to be a blessing, but it's also alright to receive them.

Turkey Burgers

Are you mood for a healthier choice, yet something different?  If so, I have the perfect suggestion for you...turkey burgers.  I make them sort of unique, so bare with me and have an open mind.  They'll taste fantastic!  Admittedly, the first time I set out to cook this creation, I was nervous.  Now, it's a favorite that my family plus love that is often repeated.

Turkey Burger Recipe
1 lb Purdue Lean Ground Turkey
3 Scallion Pieces minced
1 Large Celery Stalk minced
1 Can of Del Monte Half Pears, mince two (save the rest for something else)
3 Tablespoons of Chopped Walnuts
1 Pack of Hamburger Buns

Seasonings Needed - Parsley, Pepper, Marjoram, and Savory.

Please not that you will also need a medium or large size tray or foil pan and Extra Virgin Olive Oil to cook burgers.  I prefer a medium size disposable foil pain.

Directions:

Place turkey into a mixing bowl.  Add walnuts plus all minced items and seasonings.  Season to taste, however, I like to cover the entire top with each seasoning.  Add pear juice from the can then mix with hands all together.  Cover the top with seasonings again, then mix again.  Once everything has thoroughly combined start shaping meat into individual burgers.  As you form burgers place them in the foil pan and put into refrigerator for 30 minutes to an hour. Placing them in the fridge makes the turkey burgers moist and delicious.

After the appropriate time has passed, place frying pan over a medium-high heat and line the pan with olive oil.  Cook burgers for approximately six minutes on each side or until done (remember turkey burgers have a slightly lighter hue than beef).  Place in buns and serve with whatever you like.

FYI, I usually serve turkey burgers with baked french fries and a spinach salad.

Good luck and enjoy!

Difficult Relationships

We all have those relationships that are hard to manage. Typically, I would suggest that if you're stressed become blessed and leave it alone, but that is not always possible.  Sometimes the difficult relationship is an essential one like with a parent or sibling.  Outside of extreme circumstances, generally, that type of link should not be broken.

You probably don't know which path is the right one take.  Lets face it, if you did this wouldn't be a problem.  Start with good intentions and follow through with your heart.  Be willing to meet in the middle, as well as acknowledge that you too may have contributed to the relationship being bad.  Also, commit to not arguing with the other person.

Work on yourself, no matter what your role in this situation has been. While it does take two, remember that you can only control yourself. When you choose to regulate yourself things often flow better. It has been my experience that most people react in a positive manner when kindness is shown towards them.  Pray daily because prayer is powerful.

I hope these tips were helpful and I wish you success.

Happy Birthday Malcolm!

Today in 1925, African-American civil rights activist leader, Malcolm X was born.  He would be 86 years old.  May God bless his family.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X is one of my favorite books.  The reason being, it not only tells an interesting story, his story, but it showcases inspiration.  The story of Malcolm X, also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, is the story of an everyday man.  Your beginning and middle may get you to where you're going, but in the end you can still reinvent yourself.

Malcolm was a life learner that expanded his knowledge base whenever possible.  His mind was forever changing.  Many people have had varied and excitable opinions when it came to him, but his willingness to continue learning, by any means necessary (as Malcolm was known for saying) made him unique.

Malcolm widened his perception of the world and mankind. According to a PDF entitled, Malcolm X: Life and Death 1925-1965, found on www.wesleyan.edu, after Malcolm's pilgrimage to Mecca he directed his work toward all races and ethnicities.  He preached to them about human rights, freedom, etc...

May we all continue to cherish the rights of all humans and the beauty of freedom.  Blessings always...

What's Next?

Recently, I finished a goal of mine.  I checked it off the list and took a moment to breathe.  I was momentarily relaxed.  I thought, I've been so on top off finishing my task, but now I can have time to myself.  I was about to plan a well deserved break, but couldn't.  I have been a hard working person my entire life.  Breaks, for the most part, are mentally appealing, but that's it. Honestly, I'm in a rush to get it all done successfully.  As soon as one thing stops, I'm looking forward to what's coming.

So, I asked myself what's next.  While I have some very specific goals, they are always being examined.  I want to make sure that I am in line with God.  Looking for His guidance allowed me to receive a mini staycation.  It came from the intentional pause I took to ensure alignment with the Creator.  Only God knows my next steps, but it is important that I continue to hearken to His Voice.

Seasonal Storage

Seasonal Storage doesn't seem like such a big deal and it's not.  It only happens when you have inadequate space to spare in your closet. When seasonal storage is necessary being organized is the best way to proceed.

First, you'll need to pick a place to put your things.  This is important. Pick carefully and try to avoid using problematic or frequently imposed upon spaces.  You should clear a specific area for your seasonal items.  That way you always know where to access them. This will also make retrieving them easier too.

What you need depends on what and how much you are storing. Obviously, this will vary by person or family.  Generally speaking, there are some basic items you should keep by your side. Unless you use shelves, you'll probably need storage bins or boxes if you prefer. You'll also need markers and labels if you're picky about writing on your chosen storage surfaces.  Labeling is easy, but make sure you keep all labels neat and facing outward.  Easy to read labels mean no unnecessary lifting later.

Typically, bins are used for anything that you do not want crushed. If it is important to you that the item not lose its shape, place it inside a bin of appropriate size.  You can use storage bins for many things. If space is a real issue or you're dealing with a moldy basement you must buy space bags.  They are perfect for storing clothes, blankets, etc.. Space bags come in varied sizes, are remarkable and affordable.  Honestly, once you start using them you'll never let go.

Small Inexpensive Ways To Decorate

There can be many ups and downs with the decorating process. The upside includes great aesthetic finds.  The downside usually reflects not being unique or more likely, not having enough money. The key to being successful is not letting your low budget show.

Many people crave a room change when the time isn't right financially.  That doesn't mean it cannot be done.  There are many small inexpensive ways to improve any space.  You can be frugal and love your place.  So, think on your toes.

One economical suggestion is to paint the borders, instead of splurging for the entire room.  Also consider defining door patterns and knobs.  Don't buy new dressers and cabinets, purchase handles. Another cool addition to most rooms are throw pillows, small rugs and curtains.

Originality counts too!  Become a staging professional for yourself. Rearrange what you have in a unique way.  Make a picture come to life.  For example, you have a framed poster of bowl of fruit sitting in a chair.  Place the same fruit in a bowl on a chair either in front of it or nearby. Or maybe you have a long bud vase. Use it as a bracelet holder in a bedroom or spray paint it to match your theme. Door hooks can also double as a necklace holder.

The possibilities are endless.  Simply incorporate a fresh look into your design.  Be creative about displaying items and enjoy it. Make your house a home.

Decorating A Small Room

Decorating any room can be a challenge.  It takes attention to detail and style.  It usually is something you know how to do or it isn't. Decorating a small room, however, is different.  Small rooms take much more.  You'll need a high-level of concentration, as well as dedication to solving problems while being cleaver and stylish.

A common mistake people make when buying furniture for a little room is purchasing tiny furniture.  Their thinking is sound because mentally they are trying to cope with a room that is already less than spacious.  The thought is reasonable, but not functional.  The flaw is found in comfort or more likely the lack of it.  Big or normal sized furniture will fill the room more easily, but it will also be comfortable and make you feel like you have something special.

Another thing to consider is dual-ability.  Pieces purchased for this room should have more than one use if possible.  For instance, if you need both storage and somewhere to sit, consider a storage bench. That way it is serving two necessary functions, but you've only added one thing.

Use as much of the rooms existing real estate as possible.  The walls can be used for files and unique storage.  Also, don't forget about the under the bed space too.  Now a days, stores like Bed, Bath & Beyond make these space possibilities easy and attractive; adding to the decor.

Good luck!  It's not easy, but it is doable.

Thankful

Lately, I have been reflecting on my life.  Much has changed, although, many things have not.  The way I look at things are different.  Trust me, your perception of things matter.

I care deeply and appreciate things in a more positive manner.  I have no tolerance for negativity in my life.  Even waking up has changed. Previously, it was just something I did.  Now, as soon as I open my eyes, I thank God for another day and praise His holy name. No matter what is going on, I have learned to remain thankful to God.

Blessings to you and yours always.

Free Time

Free time is hard to acquire. In fact, it's rare if you're a person with many obligations. That is why it's important to know how to use it. If you are lucky enough to find yourself with this precious kind of time use it wisely.

It is imperative to relax and relate, but there is more to life. Sadly, many people don't know what to do with themselves when left alone. An underlined fear tends to rear its ugly head and take over; sending the sudden loner out to look for others. Of course, mingling is great, but do not underestimate the power of being alone.

It's important to get out with friends, but you should also appreciate your own space in time. Use your time doing whatever is truly best for your life, but consider some activities for one. You could go for a walk, read, learn to meditate, start a project or pray, among many other things.  Love yourself enough to be able to be alone.

World Changer

When you were growing up, what did you want to become?  A doctor?  Singer?  Teacher?  Perhaps all of these professions at once? Most people have changed the answer to that question quite a few times over the years.  Even as an adult, some feel the need to refine it once or twice.

I was no different, although, one thing never changed.  I always wanted to be a positive world changer.  Regardless of the field, I wanted to be of service to mankind and make the world a better place.  Today, I remain the same. I still want to do good and spread love throughout the globe.

No matter what you do for a living, think about how you can use it to improve life and help people.  Or think outside of your workstation. Create a group that is all about being progressive in the world. Remember, one person can make a difference and change the world.

Honoring Your Children

Society makes mention of honor from time to time in various ways. Judges are considered honorable. Married couples are supposed to honor their union and children are supposed to honor their mother and father. What about the children themselves?

When honor is given a "face" it is rarely the face of a child. Why is that? I know parents want a child with integrity. In fact, an etiquette basic for children is that they must be respectful.

I have been a mother for nearly two decades now and have learned a few things about children.

1) They are people too. Children are not just small disconnected pieces of our flesh that better fall in line.

2) They deserve respect. It's more likely they will be upright citizens because they have been treated righteously throughout their entire lives.

3) They are delicate. Dishonorable behavior towards them can contribute to low self-esteem.

As a child's guardian, natural or not, be mindful of what you are actually teaching them. Remember, you are not only nurturing a child, you're also helping to mold a future adult.

Dreams

Lately, I have been experiencing the most intense dreams.  They are filled with everything from blissful days in the park to high speed chases that end in confusion.  It's truly more night action than I can bare.  Generally, I am not aware of having a dream.  When I sleep, I drift off into a dark place of rest and wake up feeling refreshed.  I have longed for my deep sleep to return.

People have often had varying opinions on the relevance of a dream. Some believe that it is all important and unlocking its truth is as simple as having the dream interpreted.  Others view it as nightly entertainment, virtually synonymous with watching television.

I rest somewhere in the middle on the issue.  I have had good and bad dreams of the amusement variety, as well as mind-benders. There are things that definitely cannot be ignored, but I'm still not sold on over analyzing it to survive.

I'd like to know what you think.  Where do you weigh in on this issue of dreams in reality?

My Girls

In the spirit of today, Mother's Day, I am sharing a poem entitled My Girls by Alice Benton.  I hope you love it, after all, Mother's Day is about a mother AND her child(ren).

My Girls

You are wonderfully separate
Although an important part of me
Daily you impress me
Being wildly independent
And wise beyond your years
I have learned much
Through your love
I have nurtured you
And yet we have raised each other
I see
Intelligence, beauty & great spirit
You humble me
Thank you
For a priceless legacy
God has shown favor on me
Through you - my girls

Evening Thoughts

Last night, I went to bed with one of my daughters on my mind heavily. Then my thoughts swiftly shifted toward my other daughter. Thankfully, I no longer quickly give in to panic, but I did think, what is this about? I simply decided to go with these thoughts and see where Jesus led.

That was a good decision. Happily, there was nothing wrong, but things can always be better. Thoughts of how I could easily make their lives better floated around in my head. I became excited about what tomorrow would allow me to bring - God willing, of course.

In the spirit of this weekend's theme, with tomorrow being Mother's Day, which really is about the relationship of a parent and child(ren). I encourage you not to wait for a tragedy to hit so you can fix it, after all, that's one of the things mom's do best; fix things. Examine your life and the lives of your children and make it better.

Appreciate good, but you can obtain better. Fill your life with wonderful moments because you and your family deserve the best!

Mother's Day Weekend

It's Mother's Day Weekend. The big day arrives this Sunday. It's time to shop for the perfect gift and make plans with mom. Those with extra blessings will be including grandmothers.

Mother's Day makes an appearance only once a year.  So it's nice to expand the personal festivities for the weekend.  Look for things to do that might make your mom happy like New York Gallery Week. There are many events to attend this weekend.

Remember, this weekend isn't about you.  Try your best to make mom happy, but that doesn't mean you have to be miserable. Overall, the shared sentiment should be love.  Offer it willingly and the law of reciprocity will undoubtedly send it back.

That's Life

Continually, situations arise.  That's life!  There isn't necessarily anything you can do about that.  Besides, it's not what happens that is important.  It's how you react to those untimely circumstances designed to through you off your game.

Consider yourself one of the lucky ones if you get back up every time you fall.  I'll go further, don't consider yourself unlucky if it takes you time.  Proper behavior can be a learned response.  Knowledge isn't acquired in the same way nor at a similar pace for everyone.  Go easy on yourself, after all, you're only human.

Do not allow yourself to be distracted away from the things that matter.  Make it a practice to notice how you respond when things go wrong.  Recognize being aware is good because you cannot fix things when you're not aware they are broken.

Help Our World

Help our world. I know it sounds cliche, but we can actually make it better. We can leave the world in a better place than we inherited.

When you stop and think about it there is much to be improved upon. There are some really great things about this planet, but there are also things that need our assistance. Think of ways to increase the good around you.

Every person can make a difference! Ask yourself, what can I do? You may be into water like I am. If not, you too can find a charity that speaks to your heart. The call to help the planet is different for everyone. Pay attention and you'll find your cause.

National Small Business Week 2011 takes place May 16 - 20.  It is a time to show special appreciation.  Some small businesses will be honored with an award in Washington, DC.

Small businesses should be recognized.  They are responsible for much of the innovation and growth in the country.  Positive reinforcement is a great way to show they are supported.

It is an honor to be among small business owners.  If you are considering becoming one don't forget the Small Business Administration (SBA) can be a strong resource.  Everyone has to start somewhere, but where you finish we can't wait to see.

Stick With Me!

Lately, I have been quite busy and am often on the run. I'm not complaining, but it has caused a technical situation. I have gratefully gained a swell of positive reasons that are making me more hurried.

I have been forced to use my phone to create several posts. I'm sure you've noticed. Mind you, I have a fantastic cell phone that possesses the ability to handle all things. I simply gave to adjust to the changes of posting in this manner.

I promise to continually get better. Before long, you will not be able to tell whether I am stationary or sprinting. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your patience. Remember we are in this together...stick with me!

What You Have

In life, we always want what we don't have. Those with more want less. Those who have less always want more.

This realization isn't just materialistic. The seemingly natural desire for, quite frankly, the opposite of what we possess is thievery. This concept can rob you of happiness. My advice is put your guard up and don't let it.

Work with what you have. There is no shame in working hard or even less, if that is appropriate to your life, but know about joy. What you have is enough. No matter where you are you can be happy. Internal peace is blissful. Look for ways to be happy inside on a daily basis and never accept you can't be.
