Friends & Followers

Recently, I have been blessed enough to gain many new "friends" through social media. I'll be the first to admit that I am thankful, as well as happy about that, but I'm always careful. As much as I appreciate them and want many more, I am always mindful that these new "friends" are strangers.

I am well aware that strangers can be a blessing, but many times they are not. Please remind you're children if they are on the internet, who their friends are and more important, who they are not. Please include the followers on Twitter too.

Remind the children in your life how easy it is for a stranger to become quickly familiar. Also, let them know that all strangers don't always look strange. And, on the internet, they don't always show their real face.

Have this talk even if you haven't seen your child on a social network. In todays society, they could be online at school, the library, a friend's house or fast food restaurant. You cannot always know what they're doing, but you can arm them with the information they need.

Break Up Don'ts

Break ups are sometimes necessary, but they do not have to become heated.  Here are the ten ways to avoid a bad break up situation.

1.  Do not break up via text, email, Facebook or Twitter
2.  Do not break up over the phone if the relationship lasted more than three weeks
3.  Do not use cliche's like it's not you it's me...
4.  Do not say you need a break when you know you need to break up
5.  Do not say it in a dear john letter
6.  Do not try and trick your mate into doing it for you
7.  Do not break up through gossip because you had to tell others first
8.  Do not say you're moving in different directions knowing the other would follow you
9.  Do not blame it on the a a a a a alcohol baby
10.Never ever do it on a holiday which includes birthdays

If you somehow manage to actually break up successfully, do not under any circumstance spend immediate time with your ex.  Do not sit with, call or act like nothing happened.

Maisha Walker & Message Medium

Recently, I took an ecommerce class taught by Maisha Walker of Message Medium. It was phenomenal. I learned a great deal and would happily attend more courses. I completed class feeling wiser. I recommend taking a workshop if you're able.

Ms. Walker shared important information. She really knows her stuff. Maisha has been in this business for a while, leaving her successful mark on students and clients. Her expertise demonstrates that Message Medium is most definitely a good place to go if you need a website built.

Ms. Walker has created a workbook entitled, Use the Internet to Grow Your Business - Web Site Fundamentals for Entrepreneurs. For more information check please view www.messagemedium.com

Facebook Pet Peeves

My love for Facebook (FB)  has grown over time. In the beginning, I signed in once in a while, but now access it quite a few times daily. During this increased use, I have also gathered several pet peeves that I would like to share. They are:

1. Clicking certain links. Don't you hate it when you accidentally hit a link you're not really that interested in? It becomes further frustrating when it doesn't open or refresh quickly.

2. When you ask FB friends to "like" a page and they instead "like" your comment. FYI, when a FB friend asks you to "like" their page, page being the emphasized word, they mean please search Facebook for a separate page. Usually they will tell you the name of said page and/or include a link for you to click. Once you have entered the new page click "like."

3. Private jokes for the public. If it's so private, why are you putting it online and making everyone else curious?

4. FB friends that use the status field like it's your private message space.

5. This last one is a doozy...FB warns you not to request friends that are not your real friends.

With all of that said, you must learn to take the good with the pet peeves. Oh, in case you were wondering, yes I do have a Facebook Page.  It's called Alice Benton, Writer and Author. Please click "like" and join the fun. Here is a link to make it easy. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Alice-Benton-Writer-and-Author/169108496452965

Please forgive me for being shameless.

Social Network Crushes

Have you ever developed a crush?  Most of us have at point or another in our lives.  The present day version differs from what used to be known as normal.  Crushes are now forming on our favorite social network sites like Twitter and Facebook.

Do you have a "friend" that you click "like" for instantly.  It almost doesn't matter what they say.  Maybe it's a tweet-heart that you go back and read all you have missed, only to reply to everything said.   Or is your media love showing through comment and bulletins?

I love social networks development, but feel that some people put too much personal information on the screen.  And, real cyber love makes me nervous.  Sites like Myspace are great, but some people are too comfortable on them for my taste.  All of that said, a little crush never hurt anyone.  Now, it's time for me to write a bulletin, update my status and tweet!

Twitter

I love Twitter.  FYI, @alicebenton.  I'm a daily user; it's great.  It exposes you to people and things you might not be normally.  It's a social meeting ground that helps you to get your message out quickly.  Although, I must confess I have a pet peeve.

It disturbs me when someone has almost 2,000 followers and only five tweets.  I cannot stand that!  And what did this person find so important they had to tweet those five times?  Then I have to read the handful of tweets and find out.  I usually don't stumble onto great finds this way, but some people do state interesting things in a small amount of tweets.

Anyway, I'm suggesting a tweet minimum if you didn't open your account yesterday.  There should be no less then 25 tweets and I'm being generous.  If you're twenty or less, at least 100.

Do you agree with this minimum?  My daughter and I were debating it.

Old Fashion Social Networking

Social networking is a must these days.  It's the perfect place to promote yourself or business.  I love how easy it has become to speak to another person on the other side of the country or the world.  Sites like Facebook and Twitter or even this blog have allowed its participants to forge a bond of connectivity.  Personally, I like the idea of being a friend to the world.  I think that sounds beautiful.

I'm also a huge fan of old style networking.  Unfortunately, it's fast becoming a lost trait.  Many are way too connected to their computers and don't know how to approach someone.  There is absolutely nothing better than walking into a room and making your presence known.  Striking up a conversation can be refreshing.

I'm all for technology.  Its obvious advancements are wonderful, but every now and then a step away from it can good too.  I suggest using both types of networking to sharpen a variety of skills, including being personable.

Social Networking

It's truly a new day. The social network market is nothing to be ignored. It has come a long way. It's no longer just a place to have fun. Yeah, it can be entertaining, but it's also a place to market yourself and business. It has added to the time old networking game. If you have a business message you want to put out there, consider social networks. It's a way to get around.
