Saint Michael – Saint Malachy Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn

I have long missed the days of what I consider the old style Catholic Church Activities. When I was growing up Saint Fortunata on Linden Blvd held many things for their church goers to do. Well, I found a place of worship that does things like I remember it. Saint Michael – Saint Malachy Roman Catholic Church has two events coming up: a flea market and a carnival.

The Church is located at 225 Jerome Street in Brooklyn, NY. The Flea Market is on Sunday, October 2, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the St. Michael Parish parking lot on the corner of Liberty Avenue and Warwick Street. There will be food and beverages sold too. Come out and show support! You might even find a few deals.

The carnival will be held from October 7 – 12, 2001. There will games and rides for everyone. So, bring the entire family. Please remember it is a church event; volunteers and donations are welcome!

Honesty

Honesty should be held near and dear to the heart. Being truthful is the best way. There will be many times throughout your life when you are tempted to tell a lie, but don’t. Fight that urge. Stay on the side of positivity and always proceed with good intentions.

You don't have to run out and tell the world your business. It may be hard to tell the truth sometime because being open with people isn’t always easy. Simply, remain sincere and strive to always keep your integrity intact.

Moments will surely arise when trickery is being used, but you don’t have to be part of it. Avoid bad situations whenever possible and remember dishonesty can open the door for corruption.

Panel Discussion on Social & Online Media Monetizing

Tonight, I attended a panel discussion about monetizing on social and online media. The event was sponsored by Ogilvy & Mather and the Black Ivy Alumni League. Industry professionals spoke on a variety of topics like Listening to your Consumer, Social Media as a Tool and Niche Communities, to name a few. They also named countless websites that every entrepreneur should be aware of like HootSuite.com, Google.com/alerts, etc.

Panelists included:
Jason Madhosingh - Director of Mobile & Online American Express
Maisha Walker – President of Message Medium, President of The Black Ivy Alumni League, Contributing Editor, Inc. Magazine
Kai D. Wright, VP, Digital, Porter Novelli
Nelly Yuspova, Founder of Digitalwoman.com and CTO Webgirls, International

All of the experts on the panel made excellent points. Maisha Walker pointed out how social media has given us tools we have never had before. She also urged the attentive group to know where their money is coming from. Jason Madhosingh suggested that business owners look into their followers via lists and profiles because getting to know them will help you better serve your customers needs. Below are some questions small business owners should asks themselves:

  1.  What is your goal? Ultimately, how do you see your company making money?
  2. What techniques are you using to get business?  Are those techniques working?
  3. Where are your clients coming from?

There were countless amounts of information distributed from the panel, however, closing remarks were left in the realm of assistance. They ended with, don’t attempt to do everything yourself, enlist helpers, albeit interns or volunteers. Let them do much of the legwork for you, but always have the final say. With that said, acknowledge when it’s time to spend money and get professional help, after all, it is your business.

Accidents

We've all experienced things we consider an accident, in one way or another. Generally speaking, I believe there are no accidents. Life tends to take us on various journeys. Some of these trips we had no intention of taking, but later we are better or stronger for it.

We've all had those moments when we found ourselves wondering how we got from point A to B. The answer can often be found in many of those "accidents". In hinds sight, some of those supposed mishaps may actually turn out to be the a godsend.

With that said, when dealing with certain circumstances or accidents, if at all possible, tweak your perception. Do not automatically run toward the negative. Eventually, you too might think that everything happens for a reason greater than us. You may also have a lesson learned and a life strengthened. So, lean towards the positive.

Prayer

All day, I have carried around a feeling that something was missing. I couldn’t concentrate long enough to do anything. I needed more. I didn’t realize what the “more” was until my mother mentioned prayer.

She was speaking to me and prayer came up, as it often does. When my mother said the word prayer my spirit soared and I immediately thought, yes, I do need more prayer. Every day is a prayer filled day for me, but today I required extra.

I decided if I need more prayer today, perhaps someone else does too. So, please read this or pass it on to a friend in need and may the Lord bless and keep you.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the life you have given me. I praise your holy name. Dear Lord I ask that you hold me in your arms today especially and smother me with your love. Allow me to see myself through your eyes and remember who I really am--your child. Thank you for being with me always. Thank you for your many blessings. May your mercy grant me, as well as others peace in Jesus’ name, amen.

Good Bye Pine Valley

It finally happened, the long anticipated finale of All My Children. Some of you spent over 40 years tuning in to all the love and drama, which came to end this past Friday, September 23rd. After all of that time it's hard to imagine daytime soap operas without it.

Fans tuned in to find out how this beloved show would tie up its loose ends. They also watched to catch a glimpse of the actors and actresses that have become a part of their families. And what a glimpse it was! It seemed as if almost every character that had ever existed had been resurrected to take part in Pine Valley's farewell.

When All My Children's on scene queen, Erica Kane, announced that this wasn't the ending she wanted, a questioned was raised. What's the answer? According to an article on msnbc.com, the answer is that it may not be over, but only time will tell.

My perfect ending would have consisted of a grand ball, after all, Pine Valley was known for having them. All past and present cast members would have been in the crowd and Erica and Jackson would be dancing in the middle. Erica would look around and say, 'This is just perfect.' Then the camera would show Agnes Nixon, the creator, and she would say 'yes this is perfect with all my children.'

Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the finale. Once again, All My Children supplied their fans with entertainment, drama and of course the desire for more.

Temptation

Temptation is all around us. At any given moment, you can see it, hear it and even taste. Hopefully, the rich flavor is from memory instead of present activity. Remember, just because something looks pleasant doesn’t mean that it’s good. Sometimes things and people are being perfectly packaged to entice you.

What’s wrong with being lured? Nothing, I suppose, but when the facts have to be distorted in order for you to join in the situation isn’t desirable. The initial appeal wasn't enough to get you. Ask yourself, why am I being pulled in this direction? And, what am I being led away from?

The problem with being pushed into a position is you don’t always know what is waiting for you there. We often agree to one small thing and it opens the door for others. What is giving into temptation really worth? The answer is either nothing or everything. If it’s nothing, why go there? If it’s everything, you might as well throw all of your prized possessions away, but if you truly love or honor them you won't want to do that.

Focus on the people and things you value. The more you do that, the less tempted you will be!

Life & Death

There are days when life and death nearly collide. The two opposite ended realms tend to cast an unthinkable reality unto those not ready to except more than one. Yet, there comes a time when we all have to deal with both.

When you’re extremely close to the deceased, living without them poses a problem. Our endless thoughts about death can cause trouble too. How does one safely mingle between these worlds?

The answer can appear to be many things. We as people will attach to anyone or thing in desperation, to survive. The truth is God is all we need to withstand any given situation. His love endures all things.

Big Dreamer

1.
If you’ve been around for a while, you can probably tell I’m big a dreamer. It really doesn’t matter if we’re talking about a fantasized ambition or a dream state. That’s even more obvious if you have read my novel, Beauty in Pain. While I don’t dream every day, I am fairly consistent with it. The one type of dreaming, I never do is daydream, at least until today.

After tending to many things I had to do, I was left feeling exhausted and like I needed to lean on someone. I decided to take a mid-day nap, something I rarely do and that’s when it happened. I experienced my first daydream! It was simple and beautiful. In it, Jesus allowed me to lie my head down on His lap as I rested while He rubbed my head.

It was the best nap I ever had. I relaxed in a way that left me feeling whole and later remarkably resilient. I knew that I was alright. I also knew that the only one I ever needed to lean on was already there.

Your Take On Bad Days

1.
Your take on bad days should be that there are none. There are times when every possible outcome looks bad. And, everything feels bad too. Yes, we are all tempted to say, when it looks like, smells like and feels like a bad day it’s the worst day ever, but we shouldn't.

When you experience such a day, remind yourself that your senses are betraying you. Know that you are well because His stripes have deemed you so. Intentionally make a decision to shine in His glory.

How you act is not up to what occurs. It’s up to you! You may not be able to control what happens, but you can control how you react to it. Make an effort to smile when you would rather frown. Be nicer because it’s more likely that you will yell. Stay mindful and don’t let a set of circumstances dictate how you will be during the day. Choose to make things better instead of worse.

Show love every chance you get, especially when you’re not feeling it. The truth is you’re always loved. If you allow yourself to flip the negative, eventually, your take on bad days will change.

International Day of Peace

Wednesday, September 21, 2011, is the International Day of Peace. According to un.org, this day was established in 1981, but the 21st date of September became annual in 2001. Further, the United Nations extends an invitation to all people to observe this day of peace through education and awareness.

You can express your support on this upcoming International Day of Peace in your everyday life. Remember, peace is always a good a thing. You can have a discussion on how to live peacefully at home, in your neighborhood or in relationships. Internationaldayofpeace.org encourages everyone to participate on Wednesday.

Global peace is a tall order, but if you and I attempt to do our part we move closer to it. Perhaps, others will be inspired by watching you. Why not help? It's only one day and takes us a step closer to living happier.

What are you doing for the International Day of Peace?

Home

1.
There are people who have never really felt like they’re at home. They have gone through their entire lives not necessarily feeling empty, but not as settled as one should be in their house. They are comfortable, but not totally relaxed. There are not in complete harmony with their surroundings.

If that is you, know there is a place for you. A home perfectly matched with your being does exist. It is so sweet that it is instantly recognizable. Trust me your heart will know when it has landed among blissful quarters. Your mind will recognize the new soaring feeling of self extension and freedom manifested.

You may not have found your place yet, but it is out there. I do believe that when the time is right you will find out exactly where you belong. You’ll know it’s yours because every inch of you will exude happiness.

Oh That Tricky B...

Yeah, yeah, I know what you’re thinking, but this time the B stands for Beelzebub. You may know him by his many other names that include, but are not limited to Lucifer, the devil and fallen angel. Well, I want you to know that he’s not only trickier than you can imagine, he is also very clever too.

Honestly, his seemingly wonderful intellect is why so many become inundated by negative forces in their lives. Let’s face it, if his approach always screamed, “I’m literally your worst nightmare come to life.” We’d all run screaming for our Lord and Savior, but instead many disguises are used, so many caught off guard.

Know that God doesn’t want bad things for you in any form. So when it exists, you need to stop everything because that tricky b found a way to ride shotgun in your car. He may even be sitting next to you in your living room. The fallen one is hidden inside things we don’t think of as spiritual problems. That means, if there is anything that you should have dominion over, but instead, it is ruling you that is where you’ll find him.

Pray…use what God gave you to regain control over your life. That will vary for each person because our gifts are different. Get lost in His word and unleash it in your life!

Inspiration

Have you been in need of a little inspiration? Well, there’s good and bad news. Which do you want to hear first? Typically, you start with the negative so there is something positive coming your way.

The bad news is if you’re uninspired, it’s probably you. The way you think can keep you closed off from the things and people you need. A simple attitude adjustment towards positivity can change everything.

The really good news is that inspiration can come from anywhere. You simply have to learn to see it. Train your mind to be opened to all the things that stimulate us.  Once you focus on the idea of a random creative combustion it will appear in varied forms, which includes people. And, before you know it, you’ll possess a personal muse of your own.

Commitment

Some days are extremely long. They can honestly feel like it's never ending. They're filled with all types of things you need to get done, which can be good, but it's still tiring. There will be moments when everything on your list is important and needs to be done today, except one.

The last item may be essential to someone else, so you don't have to do it. It can be very tempting to offer to help another day, but don't. Keep going because you made a commitment. Often, it is fairly easy to honor your obligation.

Yes, there are times when it is more important to cancel an appearance. After all, life can through some curve balls into a situation, but those circumstances will be obvious for the most part. Use your best judgment and be accountable because promises from you should be meaningful.

The Museum at FIT

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) is a wonderful college that has many great things to offer. Creativity literally exudes from the walls to great those in the building. It doesn't really matter where you are on campus your imagination is being stimulated. Even the library sports a man made out of books. One of the best ways heart and soul of FIT is excellently represented in its museum, which is entitled, the Museum at FIT.

This museum is a must see if you have a love for fashion. Although it's an interesting find for anyone. Currently, Sporting Life is being exhibited. It has been running since May 25th and will continue until November 5, 2011. This collection displays clothing through history right up to present day. If you have no knowledge of clothes pieces through time, it will educate you. Some of the fashion is not only remarkable, it's unbelievable. You will definitely leave with an appreciation for what we wear, as well as no longer use to adorn our bodies.

While I do suggest you visit this exhibit, which if free to the public, if it's not for you remember The Museum at FIT. It is always filled with wonderful surprises. In the past, First Lady, Michelle Obama's Inaugural Outfit was here too. So, stay on the look out for upcoming exhibitions!

Ten Years Later

From the moment I woke up today, I was overly aware that my feeling was sort of somber. I wanted to log on and ‘say’ something, but repeatedly thought, what can I say? I was experiencing a loss for words and believe me that isn’t an easy task to accomplish. Usually, when I’m not speaking there is a reason that I have chosen not to, but this was different.

I woke up, followed my prayerful, as well as thankful routine, but was automatically reflective. I recalled September 11, 2001, so vividly. I thought heavily of the people I was with and our long journey home. I wanted to reach out to a particular friend, but didn’t know if she would want to talk about it…even after all of this time.

So much has happened in this last decade. Time has flown by for some, while it has moved much slower for others. We are progressing wonderfully, yet still trying to move past all that was lost. There are those of us that continue to deal with mental and physical illness from all that happened.

We've come a long way. I salute every person that has done their part fighting towards a new and brighter future one day at a time. I know it isn’t easy. You help to inspire others to be and do well. May God continue to bless and keep you.

Honestly, if I told you all of the mental trips I went on today this post would be way too long. So I’ll end on my most important sentiments. May God bless all those lost who were lost, as well as all those who loved them and loves them still. May He continue to bless those who were wounded both physically and mentally. Also, thank you to all of the first responders and our troops…God bless you too.

God bless America & our world in Jesus' name, amen!

B-Hive Lounge

Tonight was girls night out on the town. A couple of girlfriends and I were looking for a good spot to just chill and be happy. Well, we lucked out! The girls and I settled at a great spot, the B-Hive Lounge in Brooklyn, NY.

This spot is conveniently located on Atlantic Avenue near the corner of Grand Avenue and has much to offer its patrons. There are Reggae Mondays, Time Out Tuesdays, Caribbean Spice Wednesdays, After Work Thursdays, Blazin Hot Fridays, Sophisticated Saturdays and Soul Food Sundays plus much more to look forward to experiencing. The B-Hive's ambiance is wonderful. It consist of  a bar area in the front and huge dance floor in the back. The music kept people jumping to their feet and running to the dance floor.

They have also recently added food to this locale. The menu included a variety of choices which includes fried shrimp, salmon cakes and honey mustard wings to name a few delightful items. I tasted the fried shrimp, salmon cakes and french fries. The entire meal was scrumptious!

The night was fantastic & we will return!

Raising Children

When it comes to your children you always want the best for them. In fact, that is exactly why you spend countless hours trying to teach them right from wrong. You've done your best to mold this person from birth into perfection and yet, they keep demonstrating characteristics you never factored into their lives.

Your child or children have somehow managed to become their own person. They do both things that you like and can't stand. The truth is they were always an individual, but their was a time when they reflected you more than themselves.

Honestly, the best any parent can do is guide them. Tell them all the things you needed to know, but were never told. Hopefully, the really important things stay with them and right decisions are made.

There most certainly will come a time when they do something that doesn't make you happy. That too is a part of life with children. Know that you were never supposed to save them from everything in the world. Beautiful things will happen, as well as mess ups, just be there for them. Reinforce, your love for your child and move forward in a positive. Also, never stop praying for them and yourself.

There Is A Way

When faced with adversity, it is difficult to remain positive, but you must. It's true, life can be hard  sometimes, but carrying on is essential. Don't get lost in the nonsense that attempts to weigh you down.

Fight to stay appreciative of your circumstance. Bad things may be thrown your way, but you can rise above it. Choose to realize all of the good around you. When you find out news that you didn't necessarily want, focus on other just as relevant information that has blessed your day.

Once you get into looking for the best in any given situation, eventually, it will become natural. Never give up on being a better version of yourself! All is well even when you cannot tell at first through your own eyes. Thankfully, God's vision is stellar!

Happy Birthday Charity Water!

Please join Alice Benton's Blog in wishing Charity Water a very happy birthday! Wednesday, September 7, 2011, the Charity Water organization turned five! It was a very exciting day because that's five years of assisting individuals, as well as whole communities.

Usually, Charity Water birthdays are spent in the field, but this year was different. The Charity Water Team stayed busy on location in New York. I was one of many volunteers who was happily allowed to spend the day with them. There was a birthday video created in the office today and yes, yours truly can be found in the background briefly along with many other volunteers. Later in the evening, was Charity Water's birthday party. It was wonderful!

More importantly, is what has been accomplished within five years. This organization has helped over two million people obtain clean and safe water, in nineteen countries. That is simply amazing! May they continue to celebrate more birthdays while further blessing the world.

Driven by Fear or Love

Some of us allow fear drive to our lives. Yes it will, of course, move you in a fast and furious manner. Its rewards are tempting, but they tend to keep you in a negative place. You'll never really be able to enjoy the supposed benefits you are receiving. Instead, you become captive to the false looking forward motion; a slave to fury.

Begin thinking about where fear comes from and how it keeps you in line. Are you really achieving your goals that way? You'll probably realize that you're not...you're just afraid, but it's never to late to turn things around.

Live from a place of strength! We all want security and there is only one way to get it. Let love drive you! Revamping your personal road map might be a little difficult, but definitively worth it in the end.

True Love

True love has the ability to appear crazy. That's because when it exist you remain during some of the worst situations. True love is independent of the actions of a loved one. That means that there is nothing the one you love can do to make you not love them.

The easiest way to get this lesson is through a family member; your child for instance. Regardless of what that child does, your love for them is unwaving. It remains no matter how much they love or hurt you or others.

That unshakable love doesn't have to mean that you agree or accept what they do. It only states that they are always loved by you. Your heart will always be with them and that fact will change. True love is unconditional.

Are you loving with conditions?

Book Ideas

You have a fantastic story idea. It’s rolling around in your head fighting to get out. You are absolutely certain that if you are allowed to pitch it, you would make millions. So, you ask anyone that is willing to listen, how to get started. Well, the answer is clear, just let the story out.

Ideas are great, but when it comes down to it your story will speak for itself. If your old school, dedicate a notebook to writing the story down. If you're more modern get to typing. There is even a solution for those of you who are not inclined to do either of the previously mentioned methods. Buy a recorder and speak your story into being.

There is plenty of time to worry about next steps. In my opinion, the story comes first. Believe it or not, even the best of ideas can be forgotten with enough time and life interruptions. So don't rob yourself nor society of your enhanced literary views. Once the story has been created you can move on to the next step.

A Letter To Our Father

If you feel this way, please do not give in to the negativity. I urge you to hold on and get suitable help when needed.

Dear God,

I heard that some people write letters when they have reached a breaking point. These letters can be cathartic ramblings or a good-bye. So, here's mine.

Today was awful. It may have been one of the worst days of life. I felt like I was drowning and like there is no point to all that I am going through. I can't breath sometime because I'm so sad...it's hard to go on...  I feel, there is nothing left for me to do, yet I praise your holy name.

I will continue to praise you. I will seek all the goodness that you have for me. I will not give up because I know that I am important you and your children. I am your child. Things will get better and I will get help, in Jesus' name, Amen.

Choosing to say hello,

Your Ever Faithful Child

Support

When taking on a new project, support can be comforting. It even has the ability to feel vital while making you all warm and fuzzy inside. After all, who doesn't want to feel supported? Receiving it appears to send an energetic wave through the system that is phenomenal.

Those of us who fail to gain great endorsements are often left feeling like something is wrong. Instead of focusing on what's important we pay too much attention to those who are not lending us a boost of sustenance.

Don't put too much into what others want to see from you. Know that you have all the support you need because Jesus is on your side. Whether you know it or not, you're alright. God's life for you rest on your trust in Him. So, pray for your naysayers while moving forward in faith.

Haste Not

Rushing to get things done can be satisfying. While I am a fan of staying on track, caution must be taken. Life, along and its many responsibilities are meant to be respected. Often, that regard is shown by taking your time and doing things right; better even.

Living in an oblivious fast paced bubble creates various opportunities for errors. That doesn't sound so bad, but it can be. Some mistakes cannot be taken back and if you offend someone they may not forgive you.

Your To Do List may be essential, but it is not as important as vital mishaps you might make along the way. Slow down and show appreciation for the ability of knowing when a snail-like pace is necessary.

Spa Week in NYC 2011

Once again Spa Week has made its way to New York City and yes I am excited! I love taking a good trip to the spa. It contributes to my picture of a perfect day out.

If you're like me, you'll want to jump on the deals made available for spa week.  There are some listed on Time Out New York. Or maybe you've always wanted to try a spa activity. If so, it's always best to experiment when things are cheaper. It's also a good gift...think about it.

Spa week will occur from October 10-16, 2011. So mark your calendar and check spaweek.com for more information.

Speculation

Many of us like to speculate. It can be fun and it's a common practice in society. In fact, the art of speculation can be intriguing.

While guessing about something or someone can be entertaining, the truth is it can also be harmful. When engaging in this activity keep in mind that people are listening to you. Your speculation can be mistaken for fact. You may take it as harmless, but it can contribute to ruining a person's life.

You don't have to stop all speculation, but make sure your audience knows that it is just that. Pay attention and be mindful of your words. That way things hopefully won't get out of hand.
