Valerie Peterson is the youngest of five adult sibling sisters. Her sister June is the closest one to her in age and relationship. Valerie has two children and lives with her parents. Growing up she was always with June and their niece Jan.

When June is in a car accident, Valerie, as well as other family members rushed to her side. Valerie is Beauty in Pain's main character and the story is told from her point of view. The book showcases her struggle in dealing with life in the aftermath of her sister's accident.
